The World Service Office (WSO) is providing this update to inform members and the public about the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles County, California, and their impact on ACA WSO operations.

Current Status of Wildfires

As of now, the fires remain approximately 20 miles north of the Signal Hill headquarters, with downtown Los Angeles between the office and the affected areas. There are currently three active wildfires in Los Angeles County, with two posing the most severe threat:

  • Palisades Fire: 14% contained
  • Eaton Fire: 27% contained
  • Hurst Fire: 89% contained

Tragically, there have been at least 24 casualties, over 12,000 structures destroyed, and approximately 40,000 acres burned.

Weather Forecast

Strong winds are forecasted for Tuesday and Wednesday, which could significantly impact the containment efforts. The predicted Santa Ana winds will blow from the northeast toward the southwest, potentially causing the fires to expand rapidly. However, based on current wind patterns, the fires are not expected to spread toward the Signal Hill area.

Impact on WSO Operations

The primary impact on the WSO office has been from smoke, which poses a serious health risk due to the various materials being burned. In response, the following measures have been implemented:

  • Distribution of N-95 masks: To protect staff from hazardous air quality.
  • Flexible attendance policies: Staff members with elevated health risks due to smoke exposure are encouraged to work from home if needed.

Despite the challenging conditions, WSO operations, including order shipments, remain operational.

Our Thoughts and Prayers

The WSO extends its heartfelt thoughts and prayers to all those impacted by these devastating fires. We remain committed to supporting our community during this difficult time and will continue to monitor the situation closely. Further updates will be provided as necessary.
