Description:
Just over an hour outside of Philadelphia to the south east, is a small town of North East Maryland. Elk Neck State park has a beach area open to the North East river and Susquehanna Flats area of the Chesapeake Bay where the Estuary is mostly freshwater, it is only 3-5 feet deep before the shipping channels, which are clearly marked off. There is a small sandy beach area and lots of open grassy fields for playing, sunbathing and swimming. For those not interested in laying on the beach there are trails to hike and birds to spot. Bald eagles, great blue heron, osprey and vultures are plentiful in the area along with red-tail hawks along with lots of smaller birds. The Turkey Point lighthouse should be open to climb. This lighthouse is well known for its last light keeper and the first officially recognized female keeper, Fannie May Salter.

Warning: the area between the water and sand is very rocky and not easy to walk on, it is suggested to wear water shoes or sneakers.

We will have the Pavillion and surrounding area from 9am to sunset so we can just gather and chat or meet new friends. Perhaps we can get some board or card games and crafts going too! Our suggestion is you take as much of the day to play and have fun and we gather in the Pavilion at 5 pm, a few hours before sunset (which is when the park closes) and discuss what we learn about what stops us from playing and how important play is to our vitality and creativity. I suggest car pooling when possible because the park charges an entry fee of $5 per person for out of state vehicles.

We will provide some toys and basic grilling supplies, but we ask you to bring something to contribute. Things we would like: sand toys, outdoor toys, etc, side dishes, fruit, beverages and snacks

Food: we will supply charcoal for grilling and all the tools, and vegetarian or beef, hot dogs and burgers with buns and the expected condiments.

Volunteers: We will have a sign up sheet for volunteers for the grills and clean up, so please feel free to volunteer for service

Please email [email protected] to help us get an idea of how much food to bring or if you want to bring a side, snacks or beverages!

BRING what you need for a day outdoors ie. Reusable water bottle, sun screen, towel, hat, sun glasses, water shoes, TOYS and GAMES!!!
